In a recent breach of promise of marriage case, Shannon v. Kelleher, Miss Annie Shannon claimed £300 damages against Edward Kelleher, a constable in the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC), for breaking his promise to marry her. The case was heard before Master Courtenay and a jury of six.
The plaintiff’s brother, Michael Shannon, testified that Kelleher had been received in their home as the future husband of his sister, and their engagement was known throughout the district. However, Kelleher denied any impropriety in his actions towards the plaintiff.
The jury awarded Miss Shannon £100 in damages, with the foreman remarking that the amount would have been larger if not for the difficulty in recovering it. Master Courtenay concurred with the verdict and praised it as an excellent decision.
