LIMERICKMAN IS ERIN’S OLDEST ACTOR

Mr William Denmeade, the oldest actor in Ireland, has led a life filled with ups and downs. Born eighty-five years ago in Limerick, where his father worked as a timber merchant, he currently spends his days in Durham Court, Belfast, living a humble existence. Despite the hardships he has faced, Mr Denmeade maintains a cheerful and philosophical outlook on life.

Seventy-five years ago, driven by youthful ardor, he left home and joined Frank Seymour’s troupe of players in Cork. He achieved remarkable success while performing as “Robin” in Belfast. Subsequently, he toured various provinces with a company that staged melodramas. He even had the opportunity to portray the Ghost in “Hamlet,” but he humorously remarked that the financial rewards of playing the Ghost did not match the regularity of appearing as an actual ghost on the ramparts.

About twenty years ago, Mr Denmeade began to experience a decline in his eyesight. In response, he turned to legerdemain (magic tricks) and found considerable success in this new venture. However, as his sight continued to deteriorate, he eventually had to retire from his performances, with his last show taking place eleven years ago when his sight had almost gone.

With limited options, he and his wife resorted to singing duets for a living, earning a precarious livelihood in the dark streets. Despite these challenges, Mr Denmeade remains grateful and content. He acknowledges that he is exceptionally strong for a man of his age and continues to face life’s difficulties with a positive attitude.
