LIMERICK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ADVOCATES SPECIALISED INSURANCE BILL

Limerick, Thursday – In a significant development this afternoon, the Limerick Chamber of Commerce endorsed a proposal related to the Insurance Bill. The resolution, put forward by Mr J. Ellis Goodbody, underscores the Chamber’s acceptance of the notion that the conservation of national resources and protection for the working class necessitate careful consideration by the state. However, the Chamber contends that the presented Bill in Parliament must undergo amendments to make it applicable to Irish conditions.

The Chamber emphasizes the need for a distinct Irish Insurance Bill, considering the peculiarities of the Irish context concerning the operation of the Public Health Acts and Poor Law administration. The resolution recommends a tailored approach to address the unique circumstances in Ireland.

Several factors influenced the Chamber’s decision to pass these resolutions. Firstly, the considerable estimated cost of approximately £3,000,000 each year is deemed burdensome, especially given the financial constraints of the local industries. Secondly, the existing relief conditions, notably in terms of free medical attendance, differ significantly between Ireland and England. Additionally, the proposed benefits for agriculture and other sectors in Ireland are argued to be disproportionately greater, with only two approved benefits under the Bill applicable to the Irish scenario. The Chamber also highlights the potential heavy burden on employers if the obligations framed under the Bill are not tailored to suit Irish circumstances.

The resolution reflects the Chamber’s conviction that the objectives of an effective Insurance Bill for Ireland cannot be achieved without drafting a specific legislation considering the unique socio-economic conditions of the country.
