Sinn Féin Stance Repudiated by Foynes Volunteers

Limerick, Thursday – In a bold move highlighting internal divisions within the Irish Volunteer movement in Foynes, County Limerick, Mr Michael Gallagher has publicly repudiated the recent actions taken by the leadership of the Foynes Corps of the Irish Volunteers. Writing to the Limerick Press, Gallagher expressed his disapproval of a resolution passed by the corps’ committee, which pledged allegiance to the minority faction of the Dublin National Committee, known for its Sinn Féin affiliations.

Gallagher’s contention lies not with the stance itself but with the process by which the decision was made, suggesting a lack of democratic consultation within the ranks of the Volunteers. He revealed that the resolution was sent to the press without a general parade or consultation with the rank and file of the corps, leaving many members unaware of the committee’s decision until it was publicly disclosed.

“I admit that before sending the resolution to the Press, a general parade of the rank and file should have been called, and the feeling of the men taken,” Gallagher wrote. He has since communicated his concerns more fully to the Committee but felt compelled to make his dissent public given the resolution’s exposure in the media.

This incident sheds light on the complex dynamics and differing opinions within the Irish Volunteers, reflecting broader national debates over the direction of Ireland’s fight for independence. Gallagher’s actions underscore a demand for greater transparency and inclusivity in decision-making processes, emphasizing the importance of unity and consensus among Volunteer members during a critical period in Ireland’s history.
