LIMERICK – At a recent meeting of the council convened on Thursday evening, Alderman L. O’Brien, representing the Mayor’s office, addressed correspondence received from the Most Reverend Dr Dwyer. The letter conveyed the Bishop’s gratitude to the Council for the esteemed honour bestowed upon him, namely, the offer of the Freedom of the City. Dr Dwyer expressed his willingness to avail himself for the ceremony within a week or ten days, pending the Council’s convenience.
Alderman D., seeking clarification, inquired about the terms associated with conferring the city’s freedom upon the esteemed clergyman, emphasizing that while he acknowledged Dr Dwyer’s distinguished status, he remained cautious due to differences in religious affiliation.
It was decided that Monday, the 14th of the current month, at 4 p.m., would be the appointed time for the formal bestowal of the Freedom of the City upon Bishop O’Dwyer. The decision to honour the Bishop was hailed as a gesture acknowledging his unwavering commitment to the welfare and interests of the community, even at the risk of personal liberty.
Alderman W., a fervent supporter of the decision, voiced his staunch approval, underscoring the importance of unity and solidarity, particularly amidst prevailing political tensions. He highlighted his own experiences with the Bishop, lauding Dr Dwyer’s dedication to the betterment of society.
The Acting Mayor aligned himself with Alderman W.’s sentiments, endorsing the resolution adopted by the Council. A committee was subsequently formed to oversee the arrangements for the forthcoming ceremony, ensuring the dignified presentation of the Freedom of the City to Bishop O’Dwyer.
The decision to confer this prestigious honour upon the Bishop reflects not only his personal stature but also serves as a testament to the enduring bond between the city of Limerick and its esteemed clergy, symbolizing mutual respect and appreciation for contributions made towards the betterment of the community.
