“Rival Meetings and Active Canvassing Set Stage for East Clare Nominations”

Rival meetings and active canvassing characterize the political landscape in East Clare as nominations for the constituency take place today. According to our special reporter in Ennis, extensive efforts are underway to secure signatures from prominent electors, with anticipation building for surprises on both sides when the candidate names are revealed.

Over the weekend, more than 50 meetings were held by competing candidates across the constituency. However, the geographical challenges of East Clare, with its scattered communities and limited railway connections, make canvassing a labourious task. Stretching from Ballyvaughan overlooking Galway Bay to Clonlara, near Limerick City, the vast territory necessitates extensive travel, with motor cars from both Clare and Limerick being requisitioned for the campaign.

In some northern districts, where road conditions are less favourable, canvassers face arduous journeys, often traversing miles on foot. Despite the physical challenges, the dedication of campaigners remains unwavering as they tirelessly work to garner support for their respective candidates.

In a testament to the stakes of the election, a fund has been established in Limerick to bolster Mr De Valera’s campaign efforts. A circular issued in support of De Valera’s candidacy bears the signatures of prominent figures, including Messrs. M. Griffin, M. O’Callaghan, R. De Coorcey, S. M. O’Mara, Denis O’Donovan, H. O’B. Moran, and J. S. McNeill.

As the campaign in East Clare intensifies, the mobilization of resources and the fervour of supporters underscore the significance of the upcoming election. With rival meetings and active canvassing shaping the political discourse, the outcome of the nominations heralds the beginning of what promises to be a closely contested race in East Clare.
