KILFINNANE & LIMERICK HURLING STAR FR. JIMMY TOBIN WAS ONE OF KILFINNANE’S BEST HURLERS OF HIS GENERATION WINNING NUMEROUS AWARDS WITH CLUB AND COUNTY; HE PLAYED ON THE LIMERICK JUNIOR HURLING TEAM AND WON FOUR MUNSTER AND ONE ALL-IRELAND MEDAL. IN 1939, HE WON HIS FIRST MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIP MEDAL, WATERFORD DEFEATED LIMERICK IN THE PROVINCIAL FINAL, BUT LIMERICK OBJECTED ON THE GROUNDS OF PLAYERS’ LEGALITY AND WON OBJECTION AND WAS AWARDED THE MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE. TWO YEARS LATER, JIMMY TOBIN WON HIS SECOND PROVINCIAL MEDAL WHEN LIMERICK PROVED TOO GOOD FOR WATERFORD IN THE FINAL WINNING BY 4.08 TO 0.04. AN ALL IRELAND SEMI-FINAL WIN GAVE LIMERICK A PLACE IN THE ALL IRELAND PLAYED IN ENNIS WITH GALWAY PROVIDING THE OPPOSITION WHICH WAS WITNESSED BY A VERY BIG CROWD; MANY MADE THE JOURNEY BY BICYCLE. JIMMY TOBIN WAS JOINED ON THE LIMERICK TEAM IN THE ALL-IRELAND FINAL BY HIS CLUBMATE KEVIN FOLEY AS WELL AS OWEN O’BRIEN OF BRUFF WHO WORKED IN KILFINANE AND LATER PLAYED WITH THEM. LIMERICK WERE CROWNED ALL-IRELAND CHAMPIONS WINNING BY 8.02 TO 4.01. THE JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP WAS SUSPENDED FOR SEVERAL YEARS, AND WHEN IT RESUMED IN 1946, JIMMY TOBIN WON HIS THIRD MUNSTER MEDAL WHEN LIMERICK DEFEATED CORK IN THE FINAL BY 6.06 TO 5.06; TWO YEARS LATER IT WAS ONCE AGAIN LIMERICK, AND CORK MUNSTER AND LIMERICK WERE VICTORIOUS ONCE WINNING BY 4.07 TO 4.05, THUS SEEING JIMMY TOBIN, (WHO WAS JOINED ON THE TEAM BY HIS BROTHER GERARD) WINNING HIS FOURTH MUNSTER JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP. HE WAS ALSO ON THE LIMERICK SENIOR HURLING TEAM DEFEATED BY CORK IN THE 1946 MUNSTER FINAL.
