LIMERICKMAN WILLIAM O’CONNOR (1891-1935) BISHOP STREET, CONTRACTED MALARIA IN SALONICA (1917) AND WAS BEING RETURNED TO THE UK ON THE SS DOVER CASTLE WHICH WAS TORPEDOED. WILLIAM SAID THAT HE WAS IN THE SEA FOR SEVERAL HOURS HANGING ONTO A PLANK OF TIMBER. CONTRACTING MALARIA IN SALONICA CAUSED VDH (VALVULAR DISEASE OF THE HEART). AS HIS IMMUNE SYSTEM WAS THEN WEAKENED, HE SUBSEQUENTLY CONTRACTED TUBERCULOSIS, THE CAUSE OF HIS DEATH.
