LIMERICK-BORN FATHER EUGENE SHEEHY, C.1917.

LIMERICK-BORN FATHER EUGENE SHEEHY (UNCLE OF ACTIVIST AND FEMINIST HANNAH SHEEHY SKEFFINGTON) WAS BORN IN 1841 AND DIED IN 1917. HE WAS IN THE GPO DURING THE EASTER RISING TO GIVE SPIRITUAL SUPPORT TO THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO WERE STATIONED THERE; HE WAS PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL BRANCH OF THE IRISH NATIONAL LAND LEAGUE AT KILMALLOCK AND FOUNDER MEMBER OF THE GAELIC ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION. HE WAS KNOWN AS THE “LAND LEAGUE PRIEST. HE WAS SAID TO HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF THE IRISH REPUBLICAN BROTHERHOOD, MAY HAVE BEEN ON ITS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE, AND WAS CERTAINLY IN THE CONFIDENCE OF THE LEADERS. HE WAS INTERNED FIRST IN NAAS JAIL AND LATER TRANSFERRED TO KILMAINHAM GAOL, WHERE HE JOINED PARNELL, DAVITT, AND DILLON. ONE OF HIS LAST UTTERANCES WAS: – ‘I AM SORRY I DID NOT DIE WITH TOM CLARKE.’ HE WAS BURIED IN GLASNEVIN CEMETERY.
