A PRINT SHOWING A DESIGN FOR THE WELL-KNOWN ST. JOSEPH’S CHURCH ON MILITARY ROAD (NOW O’CONNELL AVENUE) IN LIMERICK. ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1904, ST. JOSEPH’S WAS CONSTRUCTED IN A NEO-CLASSICAL ITALIAN DESIGN. IT SHOULD BE SAID THAT THE DESIGN OF THE CHURCH AS DEPICTED IN THIS PRINT IS RADICALLY DIFFERENT FROM THE FINISHED BUILDING. THE PRESENT-DAY CHURCH, WHICH REMAINS A PROMINENT FEATURE OF THE CITY’S ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE, HAS ALSO UNDERGONE EXTENSIVE RENOVATION WHICH HAS ALTERED BOTH ITS EXTERIOR AND INTERNAL SPACES EVEN FURTHER. FRANK MCCOURT (1930-2009), THE IRISH-AMERICAN AUTHOR OF ‘ANGELA’S ASHES, WAS WELL ACQUAINTED WITH ST. JOSEPH’S AND THE CHURCH FEATURES PROMINENTLY IN HIS BEST-KNOWN WORK. THE MANUSCRIPT ANNOTATION ‘1ST MISSION IN OCTOBER 1910 / BY REV. FRS. LAURENCE, STANISLAUS, JOSEPH’ REFERS TO THE HOLDING OF A MISSION IN ST. JOSEPH’S CONDUCTED BY THESE CAPUCHIN FRIARS IN LIMERICK.
