Preserving Ireland’s Past. Sharing Its Stories.
The Emerald Heritage Project is an independent Irish heritage initiative bringing together three complementary areas of work: Emerald Archives, Emerald Chronicle and Emerald Publishing.
Together they preserve historical material, research the past, produce documentary storytelling and publish books exploring Irish history, local heritage, memory, culture and related subjects.
Each part of the project has its own identity and purpose, but all three share one objective: to preserve our history and make it accessible to future generations.
Emerald Archives
Emerald Archives is the digital preservation and research arm of the Emerald Heritage Project.
It is a freely accessible online archive dedicated primarily to preserving and sharing the history of Limerick city and county.
Its growing collections include historical photographs, articles, documents, restored imagery, local research and material relating to generations of Limerick people and communities.
The archive is intended for everyone, including researchers, family historians, students, local communities and anyone interested in discovering Limerick’s past.
Its purpose is simple: preserve the material, research its story and make it freely accessible.
Emerald Chronicle
Emerald Chronicle is the documentary and historical storytelling arm of the Emerald Heritage Project.
Through long-form historical documentaries, it explores important people, places, events, conflicts, traditions, archaeology, folklore and turning points from throughout Irish history.
Its subject matter extends beyond Limerick to the wider story of Ireland, bringing historical research to audiences through narration, archival material, historical imagery and documentary presentation.
Emerald Chronicle provides a different route into history, transforming research into stories that can be watched, heard, shared and discussed.
Emerald Publishing
Emerald Publishing is the publishing arm of the Emerald Heritage Project.
It extends the project’s work into books, providing a permanent written record through historical works, local history, historical fiction, memoir, humour and other publications connected with Irish life, memory, heritage and storytelling.
Books allow subjects to be explored at a depth that is not always possible through an archive entry or documentary. They create something that can be read, collected, revisited and passed from one generation to another.
Emerald Publishing therefore forms an important part of the wider preservation mission, combining historical research with the long tradition of Irish storytelling through the written word.
Proceeds from participating publications also help support the continuing development of Emerald Archives and the wider Emerald Heritage Project.
Three Arms, One Purpose
The three parts of the Emerald Heritage Project perform different but complementary roles.
Emerald Archives preserves the record.
Emerald Chronicle tells the story.
Emerald Publishing carries those stories into books.
Together they create a connected historical project in which photographs, documents, research, documentaries and published works complement one another.
A photograph discovered in an archive may inspire an article. An article may lead to a documentary. Research undertaken for a documentary may eventually contribute to a book.
Each form strengthens the others.
Preserving Our Heritage
Historical preservation is an ongoing process.
Photographs deteriorate. Documents disappear. Buildings are demolished. Personal collections become scattered. Memories fade as generations pass.
Digital technology gives us an extraordinary opportunity to preserve at least part of that inheritance and make it available to people throughout Ireland and around the world.
Where historical material requires restoration, enhancement, colourisation or reconstruction, the Emerald Heritage Project aims to use modern technology responsibly while clearly distinguishing original historical material from later interpretation or reconstruction.
Sharing Our History
The Emerald Heritage Project is ultimately about access, preservation and storytelling.
History should not exist only in institutions, academic publications or private collections. It also survives in family photographs, local newspapers, forgotten documents, oral memories, streets, buildings and stories passed from one generation to another.
By combining an open digital archive, historical documentaries and publishing, the Emerald Heritage Project creates several different ways for people to encounter that history.
Whether someone discovers the project through an old Limerick photograph, an Emerald Chronicle documentary or an Emerald Publishing book, the purpose remains the same:
to connect people with the past and help preserve that past for the future.
