“Riot Erupts in Limerick over Arrest; Police Attacked and Injured, Prisoner Rescued and Rearrested”

A major disturbance took place in Limerick on Saturday night when a man was arrested for drunkenness, disorderly conduct, and assaulting the police. A mob of roughly 2,000 people gathered and began throwing stones and bricks at the officers. The prisoner was initially dragged from police custody, but additional constables arrived and managed to secure the prisoner again and disperse the crowd. During the riot, a lit oil lamp was thrown at the police but did not cause any damage. Several officers were injured, though none severely. Multiple prosecutions are expected to follow as a result of the incident.
