Judge Adams Hears Malicious Injury Applications at Limerick Quarter Sessions, Awards Compensation for Injured Mare

Limerick Quarter Sessions, Judge Adams took up the case of malicious injury applications. James Hanly, Monamore, County Tipperary, applied for £25 compensation for malicious injuries to a mare, his property, on 3rd August. Mr O’Dwyer, solicitor, Tipperary, appeared for the applicant. Mr Leahy, CS, opposed the application on behalf of the County Council, and Mr Skinner, solicitor, on behalf of Mitchelstown No. 2 District Council. Hanly stated that on the date mentioned, the animal, as usual, was turned out to graze; he found the track of blood and followed it for about a mile and a half, where he found the animal, which had a cut on the shoulder down the side over an inch deep; the tail was nearly cut off and had two wounds on it. Sergeant Thomas Ryan stated he saw the animal, which had the wounds described by the applicant. Mr Cull, on behalf of the County Council, stated he examined the animal and found it suffered from ring bones in the hind legs; otherwise the animal was sound; before the accident, he would say the horse was worth £11 or £15 and was worth as much at present; the wound was not made in a dangerous place; he thought £10 would be fair compensation. His Honor awarded £12 compensation with costs and expenses.
