Dear Sir,
I am enclosing an exact copy of a letter received this morning, Monday, May 30th, via the first post at 8 a.m. The letter, written in disguised handwriting indicating a foreign origin, was posted from Harrogate at 7 a.m. on May 29th. It is a response to my letter published in the Jewish Chronicle on May 27th. The letter from Harrogate lacks a date, name, or address and reads as follows:
“Sir,
The Alien Bill will be very beneficial; it will send back the undesirable immigrants expelled from France lately, who are a curse to society and religion. If you think you can play your tricks in our blessed country, calling yourselves British Brothers, you are mistaken. We will soon make short work of you and your Papish imposture in our churches. You better prepare and make your will, and order your coffin; you will be a dead man before next month is out. — Alfred Walmer, Esq.”
In my letter published in the Jewish Chronicle, I stated:
“Sir,
My attention has been drawn to the editorial comments, letters, etc., which appeared in the Jewish Chronicle on May 13th, regarding the existing social conditions in Limerick. I would like to correct an error that has unintentionally caused a wrong impression. The Reverend Father Creagh did not communicate with me or the British Brothers League. It was I who wrote to him first as a private individual, and then the correspondence followed. Referring to your remarks on anti-Semitism, I boldly say, without fear of contradiction, that it not only exists but is on the increase. However, there are very few, if any, who have the courage to explain the cause. There is never an effect without a cause, and in the case of Limerick, it is the same cause that has made the Jewish race obnoxious to every nation from pagan times to the present hour — usury and dishonesty. The aim of the Jewish race is to become the dominating power. It is idle to attribute anti-Semitism to differences in a creed. Here in London, we have members of every known creed who worship at their respective churches, chapels, etc., without the slightest molestation. Even the Jews are never disturbed in their devotion. After all, no matter how much we may differ in our methods of worship, we acknowledge one and the same Supreme Being. The aforementioned causes are the originators of the present feeling against the Jewish race; hence, the Jew himself must bear the blame. There is a limit to human forbearance, and as sure as day follows night, the hour will strike when the unanimous voice of all nations will send forth its mandate: ‘Stop! We have borne it too long,’ and then…”
Yours obediently,
Alfred Walmer,
Honorary Secretary, British Brothers’ League,
7 Lydia Street, Stepney, London.
I will leave it to your readers to draw their own conclusions.
Yours truly,
Alfred Walmer,
Honorary Secretary, British Brothers’ League,
7 Lydia Street, Stepney, London.
