Excursion to Dungarvan: Over 1,000 Women Enjoy a Pleasant Trip

The St. Michael’s Women’s Total Abstinence Sodality organized its annual excursion on Sunday, treating more than 1,000 women to a delightful outing in the picturesque town of Dungarvan. The Reverend J.M. Cregan, Adm and Spiritual Conductor had the brilliant idea of selecting Dungarvan as the destination, providing the residents of Limerick with their first-ever visit to this charming town. The weather couldn’t have been more cooperative, with bright sunshine gracing the journey and setting the stage for a day of joyous camaraderie.

Enthusiasm filled the air as two trains were required to accommodate the excited excursionists. The first train departed Limerick at 8:45 am, followed by the second at 9:15 am, both filled with merry passengers eager to make the most of their day in innocent bliss. The journey to Dungarvan, which typically takes much longer, was completed in an impressive three hours, a testament to the efficiency of the trip.

Dungarvan, a neatly constructed town located on the sea coast, exuded a distinctive charm. Although it lacked the rugged cliffs and wild grandeur of Kilkee, its gentle slopes formed a crescent shape that gracefully met the sea. The surrounding landscape unfolded in beautiful vistas, leading up to the neighbouring hills and creating a delightful panorama. The view of the sea was equally captivating, offering a glimpse of the wreckage of the “Moseley,” a haunting reminder of the heroic actions displayed by Dungarvan’s fishermen nine years prior in a daring rescue operation.

The Town Commissioners of Dungarvan, known for their progressive approach, had spared no effort in transforming the town into an appealing seaside resort. A charming park overlooking the bay provided a stunning view of the undulating ocean, estuary, and landscapes to the east and west. Within the park, a splendid bandstand entertained the visitors, hosting performances by the local brass band as well as the Band of St. Joseph’s Industrial School, which accompanied the excursionists from Limerick. Additionally, a Celtic Memorial Cross paid tribute to the fallen martyrs who fought for Ireland’s freedom.

Ferry boats shuttled between the mainland and the island, allowing the excursionists to enjoy the long stretch of sandy shoreline that extended nearly two miles along the eastern side of the harbour. Pleasurable hours were spent on this idyllic beach, with attendees revelling in the refreshing sea breeze and the company of fellow travellers.

At six o’clock, the members gathered for Benediction before embarking on their return journey. The first train departed shortly before seven o’clock, followed by the second train around a quarter past seven. The trip back to Limerick was filled with singing, dancing, and harmless merriment, as everyone revelled in the memories of a day well spent by the sea. By the time the last train arrived in Limerick, slightly past half-past ten, all participants returned home in high spirits, thoroughly rejuvenated by their seaside adventure.

The organizers, including the Prefects of the Sodality and the assisting ladies, received well-deserved praise for their meticulous planning and execution of the excursion. Their dedicated efforts and unwavering commitment have made the St. Michael’s Women’s Total Abstinence Sodality one of the strongest and most remarkable societies of its kind in Ireland. Father Cregan, as Director, must be commended for his thoughtful leadership and excellent management of the various events, ensuring the enjoyment of all involved.

Accompanying the members were esteemed individuals such as Reverend Dr O’Riordan, CC; Reverend J. O’Connor, CC; Reverend Father O’Driscoll, CC; Reverend Father Devane; Reverend Father U’Leary; Mr John Guinane, J.C.; Mrs Guinane; Mr M. Wallace; Mr P. Riordan; Mr John Slattery, B.C.; Mr J.J.F. Browne, C.G., and many others who added to the camaraderie and shared in the day’s festivities.
