“Grand Ball” in Emly, County Limerick Met with Mixed Response

Emly, a town in County Limerick, recently held a “grand ball” under the patronage of Reverend Canon Power and Reverend J. Connery. The event was organized with Mr C. J. McCarthy as President, Mr David Higgins as Secretary, and Mr John C. Daly as Treasurer. While the town is known for its local musical talent, it was decided to bring in a military string band from Tipperary, led by Tommy Atkins, to provide music for the ball.

However, the choice of an imported band seemed to have backfired, as reports suggest that the event did not achieve the desired success. It is said that the residents of Emly, who take pride in their intelligence and self-respect, largely opted to stay home instead of attending the ball. Consequently, most of the attendees who danced to Tommy Atkins’ music were unfamiliar faces, not local residents.

Interestingly, it has come to light that the same individuals who organized the grand ball with the Tommy Atkins band were also involved in a previous event, an “Irish Ireland night,” held a few months ago. The connection between the two events has raised curiosity among the locals. Perhaps, in the future, the organizers will consider the preferences of the community before suggesting another grand ball with Tommy Atkins’ music.
