Disturbing news emerged from Limerick as two Jewish individuals, David Weinronk and Louis Goldberg, became victims of a senseless assault while taking an evening stroll on Sunday. The incident unfolded on Colooney Street when Patrick Berkerey, a labourer from Dromkeen, approached them without any provocation. Shockingly, Berkerey struck Weinronk on the head with a stick, knocking him to the ground, and proceeded to assault Goldberg in a similar manner. Fortunately, the arrival of law enforcement prevented further harm as they swiftly intervened and seized the weapon.
During his arrest, Berkerey expressed derogatory views, referring to the Jews as “bad devils” and accusing them of persecuting the country. He declared his intention to take action against them. The assailant has been remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of minority communities in Ireland. Authorities will be expected to thoroughly investigate this hate crime and ensure that justice is served. Acts of violence and prejudice have no place in a diverse and inclusive society.
In a separate matter, there is growing public interest in the significant local expenditure and commuting rates, which will be further discussed in an article featured in today’s widely-circulated mail.
