At a meeting of the Limerick and Clare Farmers’ Club on Saturday, chaired by Mr J. Moloney, the following resolution was adopted: “In light of the exorbitant prices demanded by landlords and the methods employed to extract these prices from impoverished tenants, despite unfavorable seasons and falling prices for agricultural produce, this meeting calls upon the Directory of the United Irish League to instruct the Irish Party to propose an amending Land Bill at the start of the next Session of Parliament. This bill should aim to be fair to all parties involved, and the following points, along with others, should be included:
- Decadal reductions should be included in the Bill, as was the case in the old Purchase Act.
- The zones should be eliminated.
- The bonus to landlords should be limited to five years, and if the Government and landlords fail to support such an Amended Bill and allow it to pass into law in the next Parliamentary session, the Directory of the Irish Party, along with the priests and people of Ireland, both North and South, should demand a Compulsory Purchase Bill to put an end to landlordism forever.”
