In a significant and encouraging letter to the Mayor of Limerick (Alderman Joyce, MP), the Very Rev Dr Shanahan, Vicar General of the Diocese, expresses hope and optimism for the future of Ireland. He highlights the unity of the people under the guidance of their faithful bishops and priests as a crucial factor in their struggle for freedom.
Dr Shanahan mentions the long-sought Irish Bill of Rights, which has been fervently pursued for many years, and emphasizes that it should no longer be disregarded by those in power. He expresses confidence in the commitment of the true and trusted members of their community to fight for their country’s independence.
With great pleasure, Dr Shanahan encloses a cheque for £5 as his contribution to the Parliamentary Fund, expressing his belief that this collective effort will be a momentous success.
In response, the Mayor expresses gratitude for Dr Shanahan’s generous subscription and acknowledges the strength that comes from the unity of bishops, priests, and the people. He believes that, with the help of God, there is no challenge they cannot overcome in their pursuit of a free and independent Ireland.
