Limerick No 2 District Council Protests Abolishment of Main Road System

The Limerick No 2 District Council convened for their monthly meeting, chaired by Captain O’Brien, R. F. Present at the meeting were D. F. McNamara, M. Corry, P. Fitzgerald, Denis Carroll, A. Stritch, P. Lane, P. Stritch, John Maddews, P. J. Mayrath, and M. Bourke. The Assistant Clerk and representatives from the council’s legal and engineering departments, Mr John Ryan and Mr J. O’Malley, also attended.

Various pieces of correspondence from the Solicitor and Engineer were discussed during the meeting. Additionally, Mr Corry gave notice that he would propose the installation of a pump at Leverstown, Sixmilebridge, with a cost not exceeding £15 for consideration at the next meeting.

One of the major points of discussion during the meeting revolved around a resolution received from the Ennis Urban District Council. The resolution protested against a decision made by the Clare County Council at their previous meeting. This decision aimed to abolish the main road system in the county and required all districts to maintain their own roads. The Ennis Urban District Council believed this resolution to be detrimental to the best interests of all classes in Clare, and they appealed to the Local Government Board not to sanction it.

In response to the resolution, Mr Fitzgerald proposed, and Mr Lane seconded, the adoption of the Ennis Urban District Council’s resolution in support of their protest against the proposed system. Mr A. Stritch expressed his concern about the matter, stating that if the new system were approved by the Local Government Board, it would result in an additional tax burden of 9d in the £ on Limerick No 2 District.

After thorough consideration, the resolution was unanimously passed, signifying the Council’s support for the protest against the abolishment of the main road system.

The rest of the meeting consisted of routine business matters, and no further significant actions were taken.
