BARRINGTON’S HOSPITAL NAMES NEW HOUSE SURGEON

A pivotal decision was made during the recent monthly gathering of the Management Committee at Barrington’s Hospital. The selection of the House Surgeon, a crucial role within the institution, was the main focus of the meeting. This appointment, spanning a period of five months, comes with a remuneration of £100 per annum. Mr J.B. Barrington, a prominent figure in the community and a Justice of the Peace, presided over the gathering.

The committee convened with the participation of several key members, including Reverend D.R. Shanahan, F.V., Mr David Tidmarsh, Alderman John O’Brien, Alderman Daniel McNiece, F.G.M. Kennedy, J.P., Archibald Murray, De W. Fogarty, Dr John Holmes, Dr Terence Fogarty, and Mr K.R. Parsons, Registrar.

Notably, the application for the House Surgeon position had been submitted solely by Dr Thomas O’Donnell. Dr O’Donnell had previously acted as a substitute following the resignation of Dr Waters. Acknowledging Dr O’Donnell’s well-known qualifications, Chairman Barrington expressed that his presence was familiar to everyone at the hospital.

Father Shanahan moved to propose the election of Dr O’Donnell, and this was seconded by Mr Murray. The motion received unanimous approval as no alternative candidates were presented.

Chairman Barrington commended Dr O’Donnell upon his unanimous election, emphasizing the hospital’s historical commitment to serving the sick and underprivileged of Limerick. He urged Dr O’Donnell to maintain this ethos during his tenure, ensuring equal care regardless of financial means. Furthermore, Chairman Barrington voiced the hope that, in the future, Dr O’Donnell would look back with pride on his time as the resident doctor at Barrington’s Hospital, particularly if he should later preside over the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Expressing his gratitude for the election, Dr O’Donnell affirmed his dedication to the committee’s satisfaction throughout his upcoming twelve-month term. Following this significant announcement, the committee moved forward with the rest of the meeting’s agenda.
