UNITED IRISH LEAGUE EXECUTIVES CONCERNED OVER SALE OF CAHERCONLISH ESTATE

A joint meeting of the City and County Executives of the United Irish League was held at the Town Hall with Reverend Father Casey presiding. The meeting saw the attendance of various delegates representing different areas, and discussions were centered around the sale of the Caherconlish Estate and the concerns regarding untenanted lands. Correspondence from the National Directory was read, highlighting the issues related to taking lands on the eleven months system and the conditions surrounding untenanted lands.

The delegates expressed their apprehensions about tenancies created after 1903, as they believed these lands might not be eligible for purchase, except in small quantities. However, Mr Harris mentioned a potential limit of £500 for such purchases. Specific attention was drawn to the Glenbrobane lands and the division process, with suggestions that full information should be presented to the Estates Commissioners to address any discrepancies.

Mr Harris informed the gathering about Mr J Ryan’s case from Faoningstown, who claimed to have received no account from the Estates Commissioners regarding his application. Mr Ryan had attempted to seek information from Lord Dunraven, who was selling through the Estates Commissioners, but the response was unclear. The delegates decided to have the secretary communicate with the Estates Commissioners on Mr Ryan’s and Mrs. Barry’s cases to seek clarification and resolution.

The meeting concluded with a collective determination to address these matters seriously, ensuring fair and just treatment for those involved in the sale and acquisition of lands, and ensuring that the interests of the local community are well represented.
