Hospital, May 2, 1905 – The East Limerick Parliamentary Committee of the Irish Land and Labour Association held a meeting at Hospital on Sunday, April 22nd, with Mr James O’Dwyer as the chairman. The delegates present represented various branches, including Kilteely, Herbertstown, Ballybricken, Pallasgreen, and Hospital, with an impressive turnout of around 400 members.
The meeting commenced with a discussion regarding the forthcoming Technical Congress in Limerick. It was decided to call a special meeting to appoint a Citizen’s Committee responsible for making arrangements to welcome the members of the Congress.
The main focus of the meeting, however, was on the labour cause and the parliamentary representation of East Limerick. The delegates expressed their gratitude to their parliamentary representative, Mr William London, for his dedicated efforts in supporting the rights of labour constituents in Parliament. They called on the electors of East Limerick to recognize the services of sitting members who have upheld the principles of the Labour movement and urged voters to support candidates who advocate the cause of labour.
A notable point of discussion was the confidence placed in the Central Council, which was elected by branches throughout Ireland. The committee disassociated itself from individuals proposing to form a new Central Council, stressing their trust in the current constitution. They emphasized the need for unity among the labourers and encouraged a strong and united effort to demand legislative reforms for workers’ rights.
Additionally, the committee addressed the issue of apathy among labourers, urging members to actively back their cause and attend key events. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chairman, and the delegates expressed their intention to participate in the upcoming Board meeting on May 5th.
The East Limerick Parliamentary Committee remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for the interests of labourers and promoting their rights and welfare in the region.
