The Limerick Harbour Commissioners held their fortnightly meeting on Monday, with Mr E.J. Loxo, Esq., presiding. Among the attendees were Alderman John O’Brien, John Hayes, William Whelan, F.C. Cleeve Jr., T. Meany, J.N. Russell, J.F. Power, W. Holliday, J.H. Roche Sr., and James Quin. The officers present were John Boyd (secretary), H.V. Moroney (C.E.), and John Fitzmaurice (harbour master).
During the meeting, a deputation, comprising Alderman Daly and Messrs. A.J. Eakins and W.W. Slade, approached the board to seek permission to hold the regatta in July at the north side of the docks and requested the usual annual subscription for the regatta. Mr Power proposed granting permission and providing the customary subscription. However, Mr Holliday raised concerns about the board’s liability in case of any accidents. Alderman Daly assured the board that the Regatta Committee would assume all responsibility. Satisfied with the response, Mr Holliday seconded the resolution.
Another deputation, including Mr James Flynn (City High Sheriff), Alderman Daly, and Mr Hugh Coyle, sought financial support from the Harbour Board for the upcoming technical congress to be held in June. They explained that due to limited funds, they couldn’t extend hospitality to the visiting guests and requested contributions from various organizations, including the Harbour Board. The Chairman and Alderman Daly emphasized the importance of technical education and the potential benefits for Ireland’s youth.
Mr Whelan proposed granting £10, the same amount allocated to the Regatta, for the technical congress, and Alderman O’Brien seconded the motion. However, Mr Holliday disagreed, stating that the board’s funds should not be used for extraneous purposes. He proposed that the board not provide any subscription. Mr Russell seconded this amendment.
After a vote, the resolution to grant £10 for the technical congress was carried with five votes in favor and four against.
