To the Editor of the Limerick Echo,
Vegetarian Depot, May 22nd, ’05
Dear Sir,
As the Boys’ Retreat has recently concluded with great success at the Redemptorist Church, with around 1,300 boys, excluding the boys and Band of the Industrial School, participating in the Sunday morning mass, I believe it is a fitting time to propose the establishment of a “Catholic Boys’ Brigade” in Limerick.
In Dublin, it is truly inspiring to witness hundreds of boys, accompanied by their Brigade Band, marching through the streets every Sunday morning to attend the Brigade Mass at the Franciscan Church, Merchants’ Quay. Considering the admirable example set in Dublin, it seems only appropriate to initiate a similar boys’ brigade here in Limerick. Such a brigade would undoubtedly prepare these young boys to uphold and preserve the noble traditions of our ancient and Catholic city in the years to come.
I am thankful for your attention to this matter and trust that the appropriate authorities will take the initiative to make this idea a reality.
Yours faithfully,
James F O’Connor,
Green Grocer and Fruiterer,
1 William St Bow, Limerick.
