Honourable Patrick Real: A Journey from Humble Beginnings to Judicial Eminence
Limerick, Ireland – The Honourable Patrick Real, a distinguished figure in the legal realm, was born in 1846 in the quaint village of Pallasgrean near Limerick, Ireland. His parents, James Real and Ellen (née Donegan), embarked on a journey of hope and opportunity, immigrating to Moreton Bay in 1850, although the voyage was marred by tragedy as James Real passed away during the crossing. As a result, young Patrick’s education was limited to primary schooling in Ipswich, after which he devoted himself to the workforce to support his family. Patrick’s determination and tenacity guided him through various professions, including apprenticeship as a carpenter and work at the Ipswich railway workshops.
However, his thirst for knowledge and passion for the law never waned. Real embarked on three years of dedicated private study, aspiring to meet the rigorous requirements for admission as a barrister, which he successfully accomplished between 1871 and 1874.
On September 8, 1874, Patrick Real was admitted as a barrister to the esteemed Supreme Court of Queensland. Setting up chambers in Brisbane, he commenced over 15 years of private practice, displaying exceptional legal acumen and dedication to his clients’ causes. During this time, he also served in various public offices, assuming roles such as Master of Titles and acting District Court judge. His talents as a barrister extended to serving as the crown prosecutor for the Central District from 1879 to 1890, further establishing his reputation as an exemplary legal mind.
In 1879, Real found love and companionship as he married Annie Catharine Thynne. Together, they raised a loving family, blessed with three daughters—Ellen, Mary, and Kathleen—and one son, Edward.
Real’s exceptional legal career reached new heights on July 8, 1890, when he was appointed as a judge of the prestigious Supreme Court of Queensland. His wisdom and impartiality earned him great respect within the legal community and the broader society. Recognizing his expertise and leadership, he assumed the role of Senior Puisne Judge on December 1, 1903, solidifying his place as one of the most eminent figures in Queensland’s judicial history.
