To the Editor of the Limerick Echo,
Sir,
The plight of evicted tenants demands urgent attention, and we must rally under the banner of the United Irish League to force the Government to act on the Land Act and work towards its amendment. If these tenants are unwilling to endure years of displacement, they must unite in energetic and concerted efforts.
Recently, the Limerick Evicted Tenants’ Association held a meeting at the Town Hall, Limerick, and adopted a resolution appealing to the branches of the United Irish League and other popular organizations, as well as compassionate individuals, to provide funds for organizing and agitating on their behalf.
The Limerick Executive of the United Irish League at Ballylanders, on May 17th, has endorsed this resolution and pledged their support. These evicted families are in a dire situation, facing helplessness and destitution, and therefore require assistance beyond what other classes may need.
Their suffering has been prolonged and intense, but they have steadfastly served their country’s cause. They look to the sympathy expressed for them with confidence, hoping to receive the necessary support.
Our Association has diligently worked to keep the plight of the evicted tenants in the public eye and pursued settlements through conciliation whenever possible. Thanks to our efforts, Mount Shannon was purchased for the evicted tenants.
We appeal to the public for their support in this noble cause. Subscriptions will be gratefully received and acknowledged by Patrick Burke, our Treasurer, at Carr Street, Limerick.
Yours faithfully,
William H. Ives, President
Johnny Hanry, Vice-President
Johnny Mooney, Hon. Sec.
