Letter to the Editor: “Ballinacurra Sewer Project Will Bring Financial Gains to Limerick No 1 District Council”

Limerick, 2nd June 1905

Dear Sir,

We wish to address some misunderstandings among taxpayers in other parts of the Limerick No 1 District regarding the expense of constructing the proposed sewer at Ballinacurra. We want to clarify that the new sewer will not be a financial burden but, on the contrary, a significant source of revenue for the District Council due to the increased taxable value of the district.

The estimated cost of the sewer is around £450, but the revenue generated from rates on the houses served by the sewer will more than cover this expense within two years. After that, the District Council will be left with approximately £250 per year as pure profit, and this income will continue to grow over time. Additionally, the construction of the sewer is expected to stimulate further building development, leading to an even higher revenue for the Council.

In summary, this sewer project entails an initial expenditure of around £450, but it will result in an annual income of about £250, which will only increase with the expansion of the area. This means a smart investment for the District Council, yielding significant returns.

We hope you will publish this clarification in your paper.

Yours faithfully,
Patrick Kennedy, Limerick
