Limerick Tramways: Proposal for New Construction of Tramway Lines

The East Clare Railway Company Limited (hereinafter referred to as “The Company”) intends to make an application to the Lord Lieutenant and Council, through the Council of the County Borough of Limerick, for the construction of tramway lines that pass through Limerick on one hand and the following streets, crossings, and thoroughfares in the City of Limerick on the other hand:

  • Limerick Quays (Shannon River)
  • Sarsfield Bridge
  • Shannon Street
  • Lower Mallow Street
  • Newenham Street
  • Anne Street
  • Davis Street
  • Glentworth Street
  • Sarsfield Street
  • Bedford Row
  • William Street
  • O’Connell Street
  • Rutland Street
  • Pery Street
  • Henry Street North
  • O’Connell Avenue
  • Glentworth Street
  • Barrington Street
  • Catherine Street
  • O’Connell Street
  • William Street
  • Roches Street

The proposed tramway lines are intended for use with steam, mechanical, horse, or other power, providing efficient transportation for residents and visitors alike. The Company seeks to work in collabouration with the Great Southern and Western Railway and Limerick Harbor Commissioners, aiming to facilitate smooth traffic interchange and secure necessary permissions for crossing and laying tracks.

The Company plans to create convenient junctions with existing railways and will ensure proper maintenance and repair of the proposed tramways. Additionally, the Company may seek to borrow funds through mortgage or bonds, providing the financial means to carry out the construction and operation of the tramways.

A copy of the proposal, including plans, reference books, and sections, as prescribed by the Tramways (Ireland) Act, 1860, will be available for public inspection on or before July 11, 1905, at various offices in Limerick.
