In both Ireland and England, women have historically been excluded from holding positions on County Councils. However, they are eligible for other municipal roles, and an interesting development has occurred in Ireland. Lady Maurice Fitzgerald has been unanimously chosen as the “chairwoman” for the Wexford Board of Dumdrum, marking her third term in this position. Lady Maurice, a widow and a member of an old Wexford family, is also related by marriage to the present Duke of Limiter.
Ireland’s progress in promoting women to leadership positions in local boards doesn’t stop there. Mrs. de Piper has become another lady “chairman,” currently serving on the Clonmel Board. Additionally, Lady Emily, Mrs. de Piper’s sister-in-law, recently secured a significant victory as she was returned at the top of the poll for the position of Law Guardian in the County of Limerick. These appointments signal a positive shift towards gender equality in Irish local governance.
