Newcastle West, – In a remarkable display of unity and devotion, over five thousand men and their families, totaling around eight to nine thousand souls, made an extraordinary journey from Limerick to Newcastle West to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the Holy Family Confraternity. This momentous event, organized with the co-operation of the Redemptorist Fathers and the parent Arch-Confraternity in Limerick, was no small feat, but the tireless efforts of Monsignor Hallinan, Father Creagh, and their hard-working secretaries overcame the daunting challenges.
Seven trains were specially chartered, and every available rail carriage was requisitioned to transport the enthusiastic pilgrims to Newcastle West. This endeavour posed a significant task for the railway officials, but they executed their duties with admirable precision, ensuring a smooth and seamless operation.
The trains departed Limerick terminal starting at 9:45 am, with each subsequent train following at twenty-five-minute intervals until 11:30 am, when the last group embarked on their journey. Alongside the jubilant passengers, one of the city bands journeyed in five of the trains, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Throughout the day, Father Creagh’s presence at the Limerick station was commanding. With boundless energy, he directed the large crowd, ensuring orderliness and comfort for all. Thanks to his efficient management, there were no rushes or struggles for accommodation, and everything proceeded with remarkable ease.
As the trains reached Newcastle West station, the visitors were warmly welcomed by Rev Father Marron, Spiritual Sub-Director of the Limerick Confraternity, and Rev Father McNamara. Led by the lively music of the bands, the jubilant crowd marched to the town square. They were then given the opportunity to explore the town’s decorations until the planned start of the grand procession at one o’clock.
The celebration extended beyond the town’s borders, with Captain Curling, J.P., kindly opening up the splendid demesne attached to the castle for the occasion. The picturesque surroundings and sylvan beauty of the estate provided an ideal setting for picnics, further enhancing the joyous atmosphere of the jubilee.
Throughout the day, Newcastle West came alive with the spirit of celebration and camaraderie, creating an unusual yet vibrant tapestry of life. The jubilee event not only marked twenty-five years of the Holy Family Confraternity’s existence but also demonstrated the strength of faith and unity among the participants.
The Silver Jubilee celebration of the Holy Family Confraternity will undoubtedly be etched in the memories of all those who were fortunate enough to be part of this extraordinary gathering. The unwavering dedication of Monsignor Hallinan, Father Creagh, and the organizing team, combined with the fervent devotion of the visitors, made this event a resounding success and a testament to the power of faith and community.
