City of Limerick Mourns the Loss of Respected Magistrate, John Guinane

At the City Petty Sessions held on Friday, the Mayor presided over a sombre gathering that included esteemed magistrates, Mr E. F. Hickson, Mr John Clune, Mr James H. Roche, and Mr P. E. Bourke. The court began by addressing the custody cases, but the mood turned solemn as Mr Hickson addressed the room.

Mr Hickson began by expressing the deep sorrow felt by all present at the bench over the loss of their highly esteemed colleague and friend, Mr John Guinane, who had recently passed away. He spoke highly of Mr Guinane’s unwavering dedication to magisterial affairs, both inside and outside the court, and praised his qualities as a gentleman and a magistrate. He acknowledged Mr Guinane’s great local knowledge, sterling character, and his remarkable kindness of heart.

The late Mr Guinane was known for his compassionate approach to justice, always tempering his judgments with mercy. Despite having a close association with Mr Hickson for over a decade, they had never experienced any disagreements. Mr Hickson acknowledged Mr Guinane’s benevolence and sympathy, especially towards habitual drunkards and their families, often allowing prisoners to go free in the hope of guiding them away from their destructive path.

During the ten and a half years of association on the bench, Mr Hickson had the opportunity to witness Mr Guinane’s unwavering commitment to the city’s affairs, as well as his genuine concern for the well-being of the underprivileged. He emphasized that Mr Guinane was not only a great magistrate but also a true friend to many.

Moved by Mr Hickson’s heartfelt words, Mr John Dundon, a senior solicitor in the court, expressed his profound respect and regret on behalf of his colleagues. He agreed that Mr Hickson’s tribute was eloquent and genuine, touching the hearts of all who listened.

Mr Dundon spoke highly of Mr Guinane’s character, emphasizing his impeccable reputation not only in Limerick but also in the neighboring counties. He praised Mr Guinane’s commitment to justice and how he had earned the respect of all who knew him.

Mr John Clune, another magistrate present, added his support to the vote of condolence. He described Mr Guinane as a truly independent and upright citizen, someone whom the entire town of Ireland could be proud of.

The resolution, offering sympathy and condolences to Mr Guinane’s family, was seconded unanimously, leaving no doubt about the profound impact Mr Guinane had on those who knew him.

At a subsequent meeting of the Corporation, the Mayor, in sympathetic tones, commemorated Councillor John Guinane’s memory. The Council unanimously adopted a resolution acknowledging the great loss the city had suffered with Mr Guinane’s passing. They praised his dedication to every movement within and outside the Corporation for the general good. The resolution expressed the Council’s heartfelt sympathy to Mr Guinane’s family and relatives.

The City of Limerick stands united in grief, remembering Mr John Guinane, a man whose kindness and integrity made a lasting impact on the community he served.
