GPO Sports Anticipate Record Attendance and High Competition

The upcoming GPO Sports, scheduled to take place on Thursday, the 17th of August at the renowned Markets Field, are gearing up to be one of the most memorable and successful athletic events in Limerick in recent years. The organizing committee, known for their competence and dedication, is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the sports extravaganza is a resounding triumph in every aspect.

The scale of the event is truly impressive, evident from the overwhelming number of entries received, totaling 165 athletes. The participants consist of a diverse group of competitors, including 45 runners for the 100 yards race, 47 for the 220 yards, 44 for the 440 yards, 32 for the 880 yards, 22 for the mile race, and 29 for the 220 yards hurdles. Additionally, there are 17 entries for the long jump, 14 for the high jump, 41 for the mile open cycle race, 40 for the three-mile cycle race, and 34 for the five-mile cycle race.

Among the athletes, spectators can look forward to witnessing the likes of T.F. Kiely, the world’s champion; P. Ryan from Pallasgrean; J. Culhane representing Charleville; the talented Leahy brothers hailing from Charleville; McNamara of Tulla; Corr from Ballinasloe; Uwiss from Ballymacelligott; Gaynor and Langan from Sligo; U’Counell from Bulgaden; the talented Hurley brothers from Charleville, and many other impressive contenders.

The first event is set to commence promptly at 1:30 p.m. With an earnest effort to maintain punctuality, there is every reason to expect an enjoyable day of sports, offering excitement and camaraderie for all those involved.
