Limerick Harbour Board Holds Productive Fortnightly Meeting

The Limerick Harbour Board convened on Monday, with the Mayor presiding over the gathering. Among the attendees were Alderman O’Mara, Alderman O’Brien, and Messrs. W. Whelan, S.C., W. Hollijay, J.F. Power, along with Mr John Boyd, the secretary, Mr Fitzmaurice, the harbour master, and Mr Morooey, the engineer.

During the meeting, the minutes from the previous session and various committees were read and approved. The board also endorsed the minutes of the special committee, which called for pilots to submit a report on their experiences navigating the passage between the dock beds and the river channel.

One of the key discussions involved the lease between the Commissioners and Mr John Hayes regarding the Frederick Street site. Following a proposal by Mr Power, seconded by Mr Whelan, the lease was officially signed and sealed.

Additionally, the board unanimously passed a resolution requesting the Hydographic Department of the Admiralty to conduct a survey of the river from the docks to Beigh Castle. Such a survey has not taken place since 1876-1879, and the board believes it is crucial to identify and remove any permanent obstructions.

Correspondence from Messrs. Glyon and Sons of Kilrush was also addressed. They expressed their willingness to cover half the cost of flooring a shed at the docks if the work commenced promptly. They requested the board’s agreement to refund the amount should they need to surrender the shed within five years. The cost was estimated at £30 to £35.

Another matter brought up was a letter from Me Moran, solicitor, which served as notice on behalf of Mr Robert Twytord, who intends to proceed with a claim of £150 for alleged damage to his yacht. The letter was referred to the law committee for further consideration.

Finally, a grant of £5 was approved for Mr Ludlow, relating to export dues concerning the Grainger line. The meeting concluded on a positive note, addressing vital matters concerning Limerick Harbour’s operations and development.
