During the evening devotions on Sunday, the Most Rev. Dr Mangan presided, and an eloquent sermon on the Indefectibility of the Church was delivered by the Very Rev. M. O’Kane, the Prior of St. Saviour’s in Limerick.
In his sermon, Rev. O’Kane highlighted the remarkable and enduring nature of the Church. He emphasized that the Church has stood the test of time, surpassing all human institutions and defying the ravages of time. It has weathered persecution, corruption, and opposition, remaining steadfast throughout the centuries.
The sermon also touched upon the history of the Dominican Church in Listowel. It was noted that the abbey of Holy Cross, founded by Lord John Fitz Thomas over six centuries ago, was later subjected to persecution and turned into a barracks during the reign of Henry VIII. However, after a period of decline, the Church experienced a resurrection when Bishop Dr Moriarty restored the Dominicans to Tralee in 1861. This led to the magnificent edifice now standing beside the old abbey site.
Rev. O’Kane stressed that the Church’s enduring power and perseverance are not a result of human efforts but rather a divine prerogative bestowed by Jesus Christ Himself. He cited passages from the Bible that foretold the establishment of an everlasting kingdom, and how the Church’s foundation was built upon a rock, ensuring its resistance to all attacks.

The sermon concluded with the reminder that Christ promised to be with His Church until the end of time, ensuring its continued existence and protection. The faithful were encouraged to trust in this promise and find solace in the unwavering presence of the Church.
As the congregation left the Dominican Church, they were reminded of the Church’s enduring strength and the divine assurance that it will remain steadfast, providing comfort and hope for generations to come.
