The Corporation and the Gaelic League

TO THE EDITOR OF THE LIMERICK ECHO.

Dear Sir,

In light of the unfortunate passing of Mr Thomas Costelloe, who dutifully served as road steward for the Limerick Corporation, numerous candidates have emerged, all vying for the esteemed position. Considering the considerable number of hopefuls seeking election, it would be intriguing to ascertain how many of them possess even a basic understanding of the Irish language.

Given that a significant majority of Corporation members, prompted by the local branch of the Gaelic League, had previously promised not to appoint anyone to their positions without knowledge of Irish – going so far as to pass a resolution affirming this commitment – I implore them to act consistently with their pledge. I sincerely hope that, under any circumstance, they will refrain from breaking faith in this matter and refrain from voting for any candidate in the upcoming election unless they are satisfied that such individuals possess a fair proficiency in both spoken and written Irish.

Let this election be a test case, and may the Gaelic League, who have played a crucial role in the dissemination and growth of the Irish language, take notice of any potential pledge-breakers.

Yours sincerely,

A Lover of the Old Tongue
