LIMERICK UNION – GUARDIANS MEETING

At a recent meeting of the Limerick Union Guardians, several important matters were discussed.

TRANSFER OF LUNATIC
The Guardians received a letter from the Asylum Board requesting payment for the cost of transferring a lunatic from the Asylum to the Newcastle Workhouse. Despite objections, it was agreed to pay the amount.

DR. MCCARTHY’S VACATION
Dr McCarthy wrote seeking approval for his month’s vacation. Having almost recovered from an illness, he felt the need for a holiday due to prolonged inactivity. After some deliberation, it was decided to grant him the vacation, and Dr Irvine was appointed as his substitute during his absence.

OUTDOOR RELIEF
A discussion took place regarding outdoor relief for various individuals. One case, in particular, concerning a widow named Mrs. Fitzpatrick, sparked debate. Eventually, it was agreed to provide her with six shillings weekly for her sustenance.

DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS
The Guardians debated the appointment of doctors and decided that preference should be given to those residing within the district, especially those without dispensaries. If no suitable candidates were found, the relieving officer, with input from guardians of the dispensary districts, would handle appointments, subject to the board’s approval.

As the meeting concluded, various applications for relief were considered, and decisions were reached based on each individual’s circumstances and need.
