Very Rev. Dr O’Riordan Highlights the Dangers of Drinking and Betting in Limerick Address

In a powerful address to the members of the Arch-Confraternity on Tuesday night, the Very Rev. Dr O’Riordan discussed the pressing issues of drinking and betting in Limerick. The esteemed clergyman, who is set to depart for Rome to assume the role of Rector at the Irish College, acknowledged that while Limerick may not have more cases of drunkenness than other places, it could certainly benefit from reducing its prevalence.

Dr O’Riordan urged the audience to consider the economic impact of the hundreds of thousands of pounds spent annually on alcohol in Limerick. If this money were saved, he argued, it could be utilized for more productive purposes and greatly improve the city’s economic condition.

Highlighting another concerning trend, Dr O’Riordan expressed his dismay at the growing popularity of betting, which he labeled as contemptible and mean-spirited. He attributed this phenomenon to avarice, as individuals sought to make money in an unworthy manner. Drawing from his extensive experience, he challenged the audience to recall a single person who had benefited financially from betting, emphasizing that the gains made were ultimately insignificant.

Dr O’Riordan called upon the Arch-Confraternity to take an active role in combating these two societal ills. Recognizing the enormous power of the Confraternity in Limerick, he expressed confidence that, if determined, they could make significant strides in eradicating these vices within a year.

With the impassioned plea from Dr O’Riordan fresh in their minds, it is hoped that the members of the Arch-Confraternity will unite their efforts to address the evils of drinking and betting, thereby contributing to a healthier, more prosperous Limerick.
