Limerick Harbour Board Discusses Harbour Employees’ Wages

During the Limerick Harbour Board meeting held on Monday, under the leadership of the Mayor, an application was presented from the Dock police, requesting an increase in their wages. In response to a question from a board member, the Engineer clarified that the wages for night watchmen were £1 2s 0d per week, accompanied by two sets of clothing.

Mr Power expressed his view that the current wages were already favorable for the Dock police, especially when compared with the wages of the Corporation police. Alderman O’Brien contended that a comparison between the two groups wasn’t fair, highlighting the substantial difference in hours worked. Night constables worked 49 hours a week, whereas Dock police worked around 80 hours.

Mr Long inquired about the performance of their duties, and the Engineer reported that the Dock police had been performing well recently. Mr Russell believed that the current wages were sufficient given the nature of their duties and the economic conditions.

Mr Holliday emphasized that the Dock police also had the added advantage of receiving a pension after their working days were over. Mr Whelan expressed his surprise at Mr Power’s stance, considering his previous actions concerning the secretary’s increase. He pointed out that the Dock police had families to support and rent to pay.

Mr Long suggested a compromise, proposing a wage increase of 1 shilling. Mr Holliday then put forward a motion against any increase, based on the notion that the men were adequately compensated for their responsibilities. Mr Power seconded this amendment.

Mr Whelan countered by proposing a 1-shilling wage increase. Mr Long seconded this proposal, emphasizing the need for agreement over a minor amount.

In the subsequent poll, the wage increase was approved by five votes to three in favor of the amendment. The following was the voting:

For the Increase: Messrs. Long, Meany, O’Brien, Whelan, and the Mayor — 5
Against the Increase: Messrs. Power, Holliday, and Russell — 3
