Labour Crisis Grips West Limerick, Unemployment Woes Highlighted

The prevailing distressing situation of unemployment continues to grip the labourers of West Limerick, revealing a deeply concerning state of affairs that demands immediate attention. This alarming condition has extended its grasp across various sectors, affecting ordinary workers beyond those involved in traditional agricultural roles. The severe scarcity of work, exacerbated by the suspension of direct employment opportunities on the roads, has plunged the labouring class into a dire predicament.

The recent suspension of labourer employment on road projects has only aggravated the existing crisis, adding to the already significant concerns of the labouring population. The lack of job opportunities has not spared any sector that typically offers sustenance to the average labourer, distinct from regular farm employees.

During a recent gathering of the Town Tenants’ association, the gravity of the situation was underscored by a labourer who disclosed that he had earned a meager 3 shillings over the course of three weeks. This dismal income equated to a mere 1 shilling per week, a stark reminder of the struggle faced by workers to support their families.

Reports suggest that other labourers in similar circumstances have not fared much better, with many finding themselves in dire financial straits due to prolonged unemployment. The dire consequences of this situation are beginning to cast a dark shadow over the lives of the labouring class in West Limerick, necessitating prompt intervention to alleviate their hardships.
