Honoring a Clergyman – Father James B. O’Reardon’s Silver Jubilee

Rev. Father James B. O’Reardon, Rector of Saint Joseph’s Mission in Ramsbottom, recently celebrated his silver jubilee in the priesthood. A member of a well-known County Limerick family, he entered the priesthood in August 1880. Although the anniversary month passed quietly, preparations were underway for presenting Father O’Reardon with valuable gifts from his parishioners and admirers.

The esteem in which Father O’Reardon is held was evident in the enthusiastic support from various local groups for the fund dedicated to his honour. His unassuming and amiable nature, combined with his dedicated parish work and contributions to the church, earned him widespread popularity among both priests and people.

The presentations to Father O’Reardon included an artistically decorated and illuminated address, a substantial purse of gold, an altar cloth and veil from the school staff and scholars, a silver cruet and a handsome umbrella from the Children of Mary, and a walking stick from the altar boys. The address expressed heartfelt congratulations on Father O’Reardon’s silver jubilee, acknowledging his dedication to his duties, his contributions to the church’s adornment, his work with schools and confraternities, and his devotion to public duties.

The celebrations took place at the Co-operative Hall, where a concert was arranged with distinguished performers. Above the platform hung the prayerful inscription “God Bless our Pastor.” During the event, speeches were made by Dean Walshe and others, praising Father O’Reardon’s qualities as a priest and his significant impact on the community. Father O’Reardon expressed his gratitude for the gifts and the support of his parishioners.

Dean Heonessy and others also spoke fondly of Father O’Reardon’s character and his deep friendships within the clergy. The hope was expressed that Father O’Reardon would continue to lead St. Joseph’s and be celebrated at his golden jubilee in the future. Dean White was thanked for his efforts in organizing the jubilee celebrations.

The occasion served as a testament to Father O’Reardon’s dedication to his parishioners, his church, and his community, as well as the profound respect and affection he garnered from both clergy and people alike.
