Mayor Alderman Joyce Re-Elected in Limerick

At the statutory meeting of the Limerick Corporation, Alderman Michael Joyce was unanimously re-elected as the Mayor of Limerick for the year 1906. The proceedings were marked by calmness and a lack of excitement, in contrast to previous elections where multiple candidates contested for the mayoral position.

The meeting took place in a decoratively arranged Council Chamber, with plants adding to the pleasant ambiance. The Mayor entered the chamber to applause, accompanied by various officials, and took his seat.

After the roll call, the election of the Mayor for 1906 was on the agenda. Alderman R. F. O’Connor proposed the re-election of Alderman Joyce as Mayor, citing his successful leadership and impartiality during his previous year in office. Alderman McNeice seconded the nomination, noting that the trades and citizens had expressed their support for Joyce’s re-election.

The Mayor himself expressed gratitude for the honour and acknowledged the support he had received. He believed that he had tried to fulfill his responsibilities to the best of his abilities and emphasized the importance of unity and collabouration among the Council members for the betterment of the city.

The topic of military bands at official events was also discussed during the meeting. A resolution was presented calling on the Mayor and officials not to attend events where a military band played or a Union Jack flag was displayed. This resolution led to a debate and vote.

In the end, the resolution was not adopted, with 17 members voting for it and 15 voting against it. A poll was taken, and the resolution was defeated. Some members expressed their reservations about the resolution, suggesting that it might be in poor taste or overly restrictive to prevent officials from attending events with military bands.

Despite the subdued nature of the meeting, Alderman Michael Joyce’s re-election as Mayor was met with appreciation and acknowledgment of his dedicated leadership.
