“Outcry Over Seizure of Widow’s Cattle in Co. Limerick Sparks United Irish League Meeting”

A special assembly of the Monaleen branch of the United Irish League convened on Sunday, driven by the concern over the predicament faced by Mrs. Batt Laffan, a tenant of Captain Fennett. The tenant’s cattle had been seized recently due to a lawsuit over one year’s rent, including the hanging gate fee. The meeting, presided over by Mr W. Nunan, attracted the attendance of District Councillors and other prominent residents from the district, all united in their interest in addressing the situation.

Mrs. Laffan’s son was in attendance and elucidated that the property encompassed 52 acres with an annual rent of £88. Captain Fennett demanded 24.4 years’ purchase for the land, while Mrs. Laffan offered 22 years. The predicament escalated when a letter from Mr F. M. Fitt, a solicitor in Limerick, was received, informing Mrs. Laffan that she must either purchase the farm or settle a sum of £88 due on September 25th by the forthcoming Saturday. Subsequently, a writ was issued and her cattle were seized.

Mr Lane, a representative at the meeting, argued that 24.4 years’ purchase was excessive, favoring the more reasonable proposal of 22 years. He suggested engaging Alderman Joyce to mediate for a settlement, emphasizing the hardship Mrs. Laffan had endured following her husband’s recent passing.

Following extensive deliberation, a resolution was unanimously adopted at the meeting. The resolution vehemently protested against Captain Fennett’s decision to seize the widow’s cattle as collateral for the outstanding hanging gate fee.
