“Prominent Limerick Priest Passes Away”

The sad news has reached us of the passing of Rev. Patrick Cronin, D.D., a distinguished figure in the Catholic community. Reverend Cronin, renowned for his role as the editor of the “Catholic Union and Times” in Buffalo, N.Y., was discovered lifeless in his bed on the morning of October 12th. He was residing in the Rectory of the Church of the Ascension in North Tonawanda, where he served as the pastor.

Several months earlier, Rev. Dr Cronin experienced a tragic fall due to the sudden movement of a streetcar, resulting in severe injuries. Although he managed to recover and continue his literary and priestly duties, he never fully regained his strength following the accident. The heart disease that claimed his life is believed to have been exacerbated by the lingering effects of the traumatic incident.

Rev. Dr Cronin held a prominent position among American priests and was widely recognized. Born in Adare, County Limerick, in 1835, he journeyed to the United States in 1849. His dedication extended to advocating for Home Rule in Ireland, and he held the esteemed position of Vice President of the Land League in the United States. Additionally, he made significant contributions as a Catholic journalist, greatly benefiting the Church in America. In recognition of his contributions, he was recently bestowed with the honourary title of Doctor of Divinity by Pope Pius X. His passing marks the end of an era for both the Limerick community and the broader Catholic community he served so diligently.
