Parliamentary Reporter Wins Landmark Case

In a significant legal victory, Mr William Collins, a parliamentary reporter, has successfully sued his former employers, Messrs Johnstone, the former proprietors of the Standard, for wrongful dismissal. Collins claimed that the customary practice dictated that reporters retained their positions for the subsequent session if not dismissed at the session’s end. The jury concurred, upholding this tradition and applying it to Collins’ case. The court ruled in favor of Collins, awarding him damages and ordering his reinstatement with a salary of seven guineas per week, setting a precedent for other parliamentary reporters.
