The Honorable Sir David MacDowall Fraser, G.C.B., passed away peacefully at his residence, The Grange in Castle County Limerick, at the age of 80. Born in 1825 as the second son of Mr William Fraser and Mrs. Elizah Graham, he hailed from a distinguished lineage. His brother, Alexander, succeeded as the seventeenth Baron in 1853, and his nephew, the present Lord Saltoun, is a direct relation.
Sir David’s life journey was one of valour and devotion to his country. He ventured into service during the Crimea War, served in India, and faced the challenging terrain of Afghanistan. Retiring from the Royal Artillery in 1886, he continued to ascend through the ranks, eventually earning the title of Colonel Commandant.
His presence was felt during critical moments in history, from the battlefields of the Crimean War to the quelling of the Indian Mutiny. Sir David also contributed valiantly during the Afghan conflict and the South African campaign of 1878-79. His recognition was evident through the various honours he received, including being appointed K.C.B. in 1889 and later G.C.B.
His family mourns his loss, including a son and daughter. Sir David’s contributions remain etched in history, a testament to his unwavering commitment and distinguished service.
