The annual general meeting of the Limerick and Clare Farmers’ Club took place at 19 O’Connell Street in Limerick. Mr A. Stritch, Vice Chairman, chaired the meeting in the absence of the President, Mr Finucane, who was unable to attend due to illness. The meeting had a good attendance of members.
During the meeting, Mrs. P. Fitzgerald, one of the honourary secretaries, presented the club’s balance sheet, which indicated that the club’s financial status was satisfactory. The annual report was also read, highlighting the club’s activities and actions on various matters. The report mentioned the club’s stance on issues like the early closing of banks on a day other than Saturday, the Land Act, and the election of Mr James Halpin for West Clare. The passing of two members, Messrs. B. Lattan and R. J. O’Kennedy, was also noted with regret.
After adopting the report and accounts, Mr Finucane was unanimously re-elected as President. Similarly, Vice Presidents Mr James Halpin, Mr Patrick Fitzgerald of Rosbrien, Mr A. Stritch, and Mr D. S. O’Connell were all re-elected to their positions by unanimous agreement.
Mr D. S. O’Connell proposed a resolution during the meeting, which was seconded by Mr T. Nix and passed unanimously. The resolution called for the Limerick and Clare Farmers’ Club to urge the Irish Land Commission’s Directory to pass a resolution requesting the Chief Secretary to restructure the composition of the Irish Land Commission. It was alleged that the current personnel were heavily biased towards landlords rather than impartial judges. The resolution also called upon Mr John McInerney, the East Clare representative on the Directory, to advocate for the passing of this resolution at the upcoming Directory meeting.
The meeting concluded with the successful passage of this resolution, reflecting the concerns and opinions of the Limerick and Clare Farmers’ Club on matters related to land reform and representation within the Irish Land Commission.
