AGRICULTURAL CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF WINTER DAIRYING

A significant conference addressing a topic of immense relevance to Irish agriculturists took place at the Town Hall, generating considerable interest and discussion among creamery managers, representatives from the Department, and other key figures. The focal point of the discourse was the concept of Winter Dairying, a subject that has been steadily gaining momentum in Ireland’s agricultural landscape.

Winter Dairying holds immense promise for the Irish farming community, and the conference aimed to galvanize efforts to foster greater engagement with this practice across the country. Sir Horace Plunkett, along with other representatives from the Department, joined the conference to deliberate on the potential benefits and challenges associated with Winter Dairying.

Mr Robert Gibson, a prominent figure in the industry, presented a paper that outlined the potential economic impact of Winter Dairying if executed on sound principles. His assessment suggested that proper implementation could contribute an income of between six to eight million pounds annually, a substantial boost to the agricultural sector.

One of the pressing concerns addressed during the conference was the issue of irregularity in the quality and quantity of Irish butter. This deficiency has given Danish competitors an advantage, as their butter maintains consistency in these areas. Sir Horace Plunkett acknowledged the disparity and noted that while the Danish industry benefits from supportive government policies, the Irish have largely relied on their own initiatives.

Sir Horace Plunkett expressed his enthusiasm for Winter Dairying, urging Irish farmers to communicate their specific needs and requirements in this endeavour. He also emphasized the necessity for improved agricultural education throughout the country, acknowledging a deficiency in this area and suggesting that more resources should be allocated toward agricultural education and experimentation.

The conference saw the participation of esteemed individuals including Lord Monteagle, Sir Thomas Cleeve, Professor Campbell, and various other experts in the field. The event underscored the significance of Winter Dairying as a potential game-changer for Irish agriculture and served as a platform for collabouration and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders.
