SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL MEETING OF LIMERICK BRANCH FOR ANIMAL WELFARE

The Limerick branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals held its annual meeting at the Chamber of Commerce on Saturday. Mr E. J. Long, City High Sheriff, chaired the gathering, which saw a substantial turnout of attendees. The occasion provided an opportunity for the members to review the past year’s accomplishments and discuss matters relevant to their mission.

Mr Austin Hall, the Honorary Secretary, presented the annual report for the year 1905. The report highlighted the branch’s achievements despite its limited resources. Acknowledging the challenges posed by having only one inspector covering the expansive area of Limerick, the committee called upon the public to report cases of animal cruelty, thereby aiding the Society in its mission. The report emphasized the role of the clergy in advocating for humane treatment of animals and expressed hope that their influence could help mitigate instances of thoughtless cruelty.

The report revealed that the inspector had been proactive in visiting various locations, including fowl and cattle markets, docks, and other areas where animal cruelty could be identified. A total of 106 cases of cruelty were reported by the inspector during the year, leading to various interventions, including cautions and other appropriate actions.

The committee thanked those who contributed to the Society’s funds and recognized the support of the Royal Irish Constabulary. The need for voluntary contributions was underscored to help expand the Society’s reach and impact.

During the meeting, various proposals were put forth and unanimously accepted. The suggestion to print and distribute collecting cards to members for fundraising purposes was approved, with the goal of enhancing the association’s financial resources. The re-election of the Earl of Dunraven as president, along with the appointment of vice presidents and the committee, was endorsed.

The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude to the officers, the press, and the City High Sheriff for their contributions. The sense of unity and shared purpose among attendees bodes well for the continued efforts of the Limerick branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in safeguarding the well-being of animals within the community.
