The members of St Saviour’s Choral Class achieved a significant success with their recent concert held at the Athenaeum. This event marked the second concert organized by the class in recent months, and its resounding success was a source of gratification to all involved. The efforts put into ensuring its excellence were rewarded with an enthusiastic response from the audience, demonstrating their appreciation for the performances.
Under the direction of Mr Henry Begas, the conductor, a diverse and well-chosen programme was presented. The various musical pieces were executed flawlessly, particularly the duets that displayed harmonious balance. The audience, thoroughly delighted by the performances, showed their enthusiasm through vigorous applause and encores that were both demanded and granted.
Among the standout performances, “In Sweet Killarney” was sung beautifully by Miss McCormack, who also received an encore. The duet from “Don Giovanni,” titled “Give Me Thy Hand, O Fairest,” was skillfully performed by Miss F. Beale and Mr J. Clifford, capturing both sweetness and expression. Their rendition was met with demand for an encore. Mr T. J. Phelan’s rendition of Sullivan’s “Once Again” also garnered an encore due to his well-modulated voice and empathetic rendition. Another notable duet, “Home to Our Mountains” from “II Trovatore,” was performed excellently by Mr Phelan and Miss Daisy Boland, who also received an encore.
Additional vocalists included Miss L. O’Halloran, Miss T. Elpi, Miss A. Hayes, and Mr G. C. Marshall, all of whom were also called back for encores. Miss T. Bernard contributed two violin obbligatos, and Miss Clare Trumby provided piano accompaniment.
Overall, the concert marked one of the most successful musical events in Limerick, highlighting the city’s vibrant musical culture.
